So I want to make a hood for my ten gallon, but the problem is, is I am not quite sure how to go at it. I have some ideas, but if people could share ideas with me, it would be great:D

Re: DIY 10 Gallon hood
sure thing, what kind of lighting are you wanting to use? there is everything from incandescents to metal halides. i would say make a wood canopy for teh tank and install a normal house screw in fixture and use a screw in typ compact flourescent bulb which are available from wal-mart. there are many other things i can think of in the form of a canopy right down to a hanging pendant light setup. it all really depends on what you are doing with the tank and what you are keeping

oh i have the lighting, two HOT5's at 24 watts a piece, and are 26 inches long with reflectors. I think I am going to make a wooden top, and I have drawn up some plans. I just need to get to the store to get some hinges-.-

Re: DIY 10 Gallon hood
you dont need T5HO's at all for fw (nice to have though). all you need is normal output lighting, although 1 daylight bulb and an actinic bulb (to bring out colors) are nice

For a planted tank, to get the best growth, these are good to have, and besides:D They do look gorgeous.
I have a couple of high light plants, that need it to grow, and the guy at the fish store agreed with me:)

ok , i never had anything but plastic plants in fw, but when it comes to sw i know a spiral flourescent bulb for a normal fixture is all that is needed , unforutunately it has an ugly yellow tint to it. post some pics once you get the hood done, i wanna see it LOL
